听力原文:M: Come in! Come in! What can I do for you? W: Prof. Donner, are you giving your Advanced Geology course again next semester?
M: Yes, I'm planning on it.
W: I wonder if I could enroll in it. I know it's a graduate course and I'm only a junior, but...
M: Aren't you a bit young? I've allowed qualified seniors to take the course and they usually have a hard timekeeping up.
W: I know, but the geology of the American West is my favorite interest and I've done a lot of reading in the field. Last semester I took Prof. Burman's course and I didn't find it challenging enough.
M: I see. You certainly aren't one of those students who are out for easy grades.
W: I should say not. I really want to learn something.
M: Well, I'll speak to Prof. Burman. If he thinks you're ready, I'll let you enroll.
W: Oh, thanks. Professor Donner, that's really very nice of you.
Why did the woman talk to the professor?
A.She wants to apply to graduate schools.
B.She wants him to recommend books.
C.She Wants to take an advanced course.
D.She wants him to give her a good grade.

听力原文:W: I haven't seen you here for a couple weeks. Have you stopped eating or something?
M: No. Does it look like I've stopped eating? I've been spending a lot of time in the library.
W: Working on a paper?
M: I wish I was working on a paper! I'm working on three different papers: anthropology, English literature, and history.
W: Wow, that is a lot of work.
M: Yeah, and what's frustrating is that I'm studying the nineteenth century British Empire in all three classes, but I can't just write a single paper for all three.
W: Why not?
M: The professors won't let me even if I make it three times as long as the suggested length.
W: That's too bad. Could you write your papers on three aspects of one topic?
M: Hmm. What do you mean? Do you have something in mind?
W: Well, let's see. Hmm... Maybe you could do something with Romanticism, like, ohh.., write your anthropology paper on the cultural basis of Romanticism, and, uh, your history paper on the influence of the Romantic poets on British foreign policy, and, OK, and your English paper on an analysis of some Romantic poems. M: Hey, that's not a bad idea! I've already started the research for one of the papers, so I can use that. What can I do to repay you?
W: You want to write up my chemistry paper for me?
M: I'd love to, but I've never taken chemistry, so I'm not sure you'd like the results.
W: Oh well, no thanks necessary then. I'll do it myself. Have a good weekend, and try to get out of the library and get some sleep. You have big circles under your eyes.
M: OK, I'll try. See you later.

听力原文:M. Mrs. Harrison, thanks very much for coming down here at the station. I, I know you've been through a terrible situation here today. Mm, I, I'd just like to go over some of the things you told Surgeon Clark at the bank.
W. All right.
M: Ah, ah. Would you like a cup of tea?
W. No, no, I'm fine.
M. All right.
W: Thanks.
M. Well, could you describe the two people who robbed the bank for this report we're filling out here? Now anything at all that you could remember would be extremely helpful to US.
W. Well, just, I tell you I remember basically what I said before.
M: That's all right.
W: The man was tall, about six feet, and he had dark hair.
M. Dark hair.
W: And he had a mustache.
M. Very good. All right. Did he have any other distinguishing marks, I mean, scars for example, anything like that?
W: Scars, no, none of that I can remember.
M. Do you remember how old he was by any chance?
W. Eh, well, I, I guess around thirty.
M. Around thirty.
W. Maybe younger, give a take of a few years.
M. All right. Do you remember anything about what he might be wearing?
W: Yes, he, he had on a dark sweater, solid color. You know, the kind of color young people fancy nowadays.
M: Anything else that strikes you at the moment?
W: I, I remember he was wearing a light shirt under the sweater, a cotton one with dark, I think, dark stripes. It looks like a good brand.
M: Ah, very good.
W: Yes, yes.
M. Mm, now, all right. Can you tell us anything about the woman robber, Mrs. Harrison?
W: Well, I remember that she did most of the talking. She had a gun pointed at us and she told us to lie down on the floor and not to move if we knew what was good for us. I, I remember I've just thought like she was pointing the gun right at me and my little daughter was sitting right next to me and she, she was just so frightened.
M. Um, Mrs. Harrison, could you describe her for us?
W: She was wearing a wool sweater.
M: Ah, very good.
W: I remember it was a dark color, navy blue or dark gray.
M: Dark gray?
W: And I guess she was in her late twenties. Her hair was short, very short and curly.
M: Do you remember how tall she was?
W: Ah, about the same as myself, around five four.
M: Five four. All right. Do you, uh, remember anything else about this woman?
W: Yes, I remember the woman was wearing a pendant or a locket around her neck. I remember it specifically because I was then near the counter next to the bank manager and my little daughter started to cry.
M: Ah.
W: And this woman came up and said: "Shut your damn kid up, lady!" So I got a good look at her and she was pulling on the chain and playing with it, a pendant.
M: Oh?
W: It was gold, well, anyway, lookes like gold. And it had a strange shape.
M: Mm, ah, now, did either of them have any other noticeable characteristics, Mrs. Harrison? Now, just take a minute.
W: Eh, no, I don't.
M: Think about this.
W: No, no, this is really all I can remember.
M: Well, did either of them wear glasses?
W: No, no, I'm sure of that.
M: All right, Mrs. Harrison. I really appreciate what you've been through today. I'm just going to ask you to look at some photographs before you leave if you don't mind. It won't take very long. Could you do that for me?
W: Ah, all right.
M. Would you like to step this way with me, please?
W. OK, sure.
M. Thank you.

听力原文:Katarina: So, Jatinder and Ali, how did you deal with culture shock when you first came here to study?
Jatinder: Well, Katarina, when I first arrived in the UK, I was just so excited to be living in a foreign country: away from my parents ... that I just didn't really notice anything at first. How about you, Ali?
Ali: Yeah. Same here. That's quite typical, isn't it? Everything seems new and fascinating. But, after this initial enthusiasm wears off, all the new experiences may begin to overwhelm you. Things that you found exciting at first may now seem strange and a little frightening. Even minor differences, such as being unable to buy your usual brands of various products, can add to the sense of strangeness.
Jatinder: Yes. That's right. Then you may start to experience sudden mood changes and strong reactions, feeling lost, disoriented, and even irritated and resentful. Most of all, you may wish you were back among the familiar people and places at home. All international students can experience culture shock in some form. ... even those coming from countries with very similar lifestyles to those in the UK. It is important to understand that this reaction is entirely normal and that it will pass.
Katarina: OK. So what suggestions do you have for me?
Ali: Well, I made sure that I arrived early. I got here about ten days, yeah, ten days before most of the other students, so that I could settle in before things got busy. Many universities run special induction programmes for international students in the week before term begins. A typical induction programme provides a tour of the college or university, an overview of its facilities and how to use them, help with registering for your academic programme, and social events where you can meet other students and staff. This can help you to start to get used to your new environment.
Katarina: Yeah, I heard about those ... but too late unfortunately. Jatinder, did you go on an induction course like Ali?
Jatinder: No. I wish I had, but my parents wouldn't let me go a day sooner than absolutely necessary. It was very annoying.
Ali: Every university has counsellors who can give you practical advice on adjusting to your new environment. These people have special training in offering advice and support, and they understand the challenges you face. They can listen to you sympathetically, offer practical suggestions, and refer you to other professionals if necessary. Your personal tutor and the staff in the international office of your college or university can also be helpful.
Jatinder: Have you heard about the 'buddy' or mentoring system? Students who have been at the university or college for a longer period give advice to new arrivals, and are available for help and guidance throughout the year. There is information on schemes such as these at the students' union or the international student association will help you become involved. I used the system when I arrived and found it really opened some doors socially: you know, I got to meet lots of people, like Ali, right?
Ali: Right! Katarina, I think that it's also important to keep in touch with home. Use the telephone, e-mail and conventional mail to keep in contact with your friends and family at home. In larger towns or cities with large international communities, like this one, you may be able to find people from your country. Spend some time with them. Many international students find that it helps to make contact with people from a similar background because they understand what you are going through. Spending time with people from your country can also be a relaxing break from the 'strangeness' of the UK. You can speak your own language, eat your own foods and talk about what is going on back home.
Jatinder: Yes. and don't forget that the university has a variety of cultural societies, as well as an active international students' association: ask at the student union. They may also have inform
