The first is the success of antivivisection campaigners in lampooning animal research as outdated, intentionally cruel, "bad" science, which achieves nothing. All drugs and procedures developed with the help of animal tests are said to be dangerous. Clearly, people in Britain do not recognize the essential link between animal research and testing and the medical treatments that they receive. Only 18 percent of those who had taken (or had a close family member who had taken a drug prescribed for a serious illness realized that the drug had been tested on animals, as all drugs are. Obviously, a large majority of those surveyed believe that they can happily benefit from medical treatment without taking advantage of animal research. No wonder so many people oppose it when asked the straight yes/no question. The views of the public must be respected. But this poll tells us that, while they are open to persuasion, their reaction is based on misunderstanding. The responsibility for providing honest evidence for the public lies not just with those who use animals in their research, but with other scientists who depend on that work. It lies with the doctors who benefit from animal research, with the pharmaceuticals and biotech industries, and the medical charities and funding age, les whose work would be crippled without it. But most of all, responsibility rests with government, which should cultivate serious and transparent debate between those of different opinion, and provide the public--especially young people--with the honest evidence they need and deserve. Lack of sleep causes many problems, not the least of which is the difficulty it adds to learning. It's also detrimental to the immune system and motor skills. Students (and everyone else) need at least eight hours of sleep to maintain optimum health and learning capabilities. Yet, with the pressure of school, family and social life, few students are sleeping near the required amount. College life only escalates the problem. Added to the above activities are more hours needed for studies. Some students also hold down a part time job to help defray college expenses. Some students are married and trying to support a family. Because of all these pressures there is also an increase in stress. Stress can lead to insomnia and even more lost sleep. With the approach of finals, the problem can only grow worse. Students force themselves to stay awake to study. It's called cramming for exams, and it can eat away at sleep hours already far too meager. Why is it that so many mothers like mine think of themselves as second-class or something similar？ Where has this notion come from？ Have we males made them feel this way？ Has our society made "going to work" outside the home seem more important than what a house wife must face each day？ I would be very curious to see what would happen if a housewife went on strike. Dishes would pile up. Food in the house would run out. No meals would appear on the table. There would be no clean clothes when needed. High boots would be required just to make it through the house scattered with garbage. Walking and bus riding would increase. Those scout troops would have to break up. Charities would suffer. I doubt if the man of the house would be able to take over. Oh, he might start out with the attitude that he can do just as good a job, but how long would that last？ Not long, once he had to come home each night after work to more household duties. There would be no more coming home to a prepared meal; he'd have to fix it himself. The kids would all be screaming for something to eat, clean clothes and more bus fare money. Once he quieted the kids, he'd have to clean the house, go shopping, make sure that kids got a bath, and fix lunches for the next day.
