Renewable energy sources can be replenished in a short period of time. The five renewable sources used most often include hydropower (water), solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass. Renewable energy's impact on the world's energy picture is significant. Many important events have occurred during the history of using renewable sources to generate electricity--but the overall consumption from renewable energy sources has declined by about 15 percent from their I996 peak to about 6 quads in 2005.
The use of renewable energy is not new. Five generations (125 years) ago, wood supplied up to 90 percent of our energy needs. Due to the convenience and low prices of fossil fuels, wood use has fallen. Now, the biomass which would normally present a disposal problem is converted into electricity (e.g., manufacturing wastes, rice hulls, and black liquor from paper production).
Historically, low fossil fuel prices, especially for natural gas, have made growth difficult for renewable fuels. The deregulation and restructuring of the electric power industry could have a major impact on renewable energy consumption. Demands for cheaper power in the short term would likely decrease demand for renewable energy, while preferences for renewables included in some versions of proposed electricity restructuring legislation would breathe new life into this industry.
Use of renewables in the United States is not currently expected to approach that of the major fuels, and due to their limitatious (e.g., their intermittent nature-cloudy days have no solar gain, quiet days mean no wind blows to drive wind turbines, dams are primarily for flood control, so hydroelectricity production varies as dams' water levels change), renewables may never provide "the" answer to all energy problems. Around the world, renewable energy is proving to be of great value.
In 2005, about 6.1 Quadrillion Btu (Quads) of U.S. energy came from renewable fuels. Each of the energy sources we use is measured, purchased, and sold in a different form. Many units of measurement are used to measure the energy we use each day.
From 1996 to 2005, the trend of the consumption from renewable energy was ______.
A.increasing
B.decreasing
C.irregular
D.not mentioned

For years, studies have found that first-generation college students-those who do not have a parent with a college degree-lag other students on a range of education achievement factors. Their grades are lower and their dropout rates are higher. But since such students are most likely to advance economically if they succeed in higher education, colleges and universities have pushed for decades to recruit more of them. This has created “a paradox” in that recruiting first-generation students, but then watching many of them fail, means that higher education has “continued to reproduce and widen, rather than close” achievement gap based on social class, according to the depressing beginning of a paper forthcoming in the journal Psychological Sciense.
But the article is actually quite optimistic, as it outlines a potential solution to this problem, suggesting that an approach(which involves a one-hour, next-to-no-cost program) can close 63 percent of the achievement gap(measured by such factors as grades)between first-generation and other students.
The authors of the paper are from different universities, and their findings are based on a study involving 147 students(who completed the project)at an unnamed private university.First generation was defined as not having a parent with a four-year college degree Most of the first-generation students(59.1 percent) were recipients of Pell Grants,a federal g rant for undergraduates with financial need, while this was true only for 8.6 percent of the students wit at least one parent with a four-year degree.
Their thesis-that a relatively modest intervention could have a big impact-was based on the view that first-gene ration students may be most lacking not in potential but in practical knowledge about how to deal with the issues that face most college students They cite past resea rch by several authors to show that this is the gap that must be narrowed to close the achievement gap.
Many first-gene ration students”struggle to navigate the middle-class culture of higher education, learn the‘rules of the game,’and take advantage of college resources,” they write And this becomes more of a problem when collages don’t talk about the class advantage and disadvantages of different groups of students Because US colleges and universities seldom acknowledge how social class can affect students’ educational experience, many first-gene ration students lack sight about why they a re struggling and do not unde rstand how students’ like them can improve.
Recruiting more first-generation students has______ .
A.reduced their d ropoutrates
B.narrowed the achievement
C.missed its original pu rpose
D.depressed college students
The study suggests that most first-gene ration students______ .A.study at private universities
B.are from single-pa rent families
C.are in need of financial support
D.have failed their collage
The author of the paper believe that first-generation students______ .A.a re actually indifferent to the achievement gap
B.can have a potential influence on other students
C.may lack opportunities to apply for research projects
D.are inexperienced in handling their issues at college
We may infer from the last paragraph that______ .A.universities often rect the culture of the middle-class
B.students are usually to blame for their lack of resources
C.social class g realy helps en rich educational experiences
D.colleges are partly responsible for the problem in question
The author of the research article are optimistic because______ .A.the problem is solvable
B.their approach is costless
C.the recruiting rate has increased
D.their finding appeal to students

To get a sense of how women have progressed in science, take a quick tour of the physics department at the University of California, Berkeley. This is a storied place, the 36 of some of the most important discoveries in modern science—starting with Ernest Lawrence’s invention of the cyclotron (回旋加速器) in 1931. A generation ago, female faces were 37 and, even today, visitors walking through the first floor of LeConte Hall will see a full corridor of exhibits 38 the many distinguished physicists who made history here, 39 all of them white males.
But climb up to the third floor and you’ll see a 40 display. There, among the photos of current faculty members and students, are portraits of the 41 head of the department, Marjorie Shapiro, and four other women whose research 42 everything from the mechanics of the universe to the smallest particles of matter. A sixth woman was hired just two weeks ago. Although they’re still only about 10 percent of the physics faculty, women are clearly a presence here. And the real 43 may be in the smaller photos to the right: graduate and undergraduate students, about 20 percent of them female. Every year Berkeley sends its fresh female physics PhDs to the country’s top universities. That makes Shapiro optimistic, but also 44 . “I believe things are getting better,” she says, “but they’re not getting better as 45 as I would like.”
A) circumstance
B) confidence
C) covers
D) current
E) deals
F) different
G) exposing
H) fast
I) honoring
J) hope
K) presently
L) rare
M) realistic
N) site
O) virtually

A few years ago it was common to speak of a generation gap between young people and their elders.Parents said that children did not respect and listen to them, while children said that their parents did not understand them at all. What had gone wrong? Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared? Actually, the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many people argue that it is built into every part of our society.
One important cause of the generation gap is the opportunity that young people have to choose their own ways of life.In a more traditional society, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents know and like, and often to continue the family jobs.In our society, young people often travel great distances for their education, move out of the family at an early age, marry or live with people whom their parents have never met, and choose jobs different from those of their parents.
In our society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did, to find better jobs, to make more money and to do all the things that they were unable to do.Often, that is another cause of the gap between them.Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other.
Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is the third cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, senior people are valued for their knowledge, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetime may become out of date. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities. No doubt, the generation gap will continue in American life for some time to come.
