Is language, like food, a basic human need without which a child at a critical period of life can be starved and damaged? Judging from the drastic experiment of Frederick Ⅱ in the thirteenth century, it may be. Hop hag to discover what language a child would speak if he heard no mother tongue, he told the nurses to keep silent.
All the infants died before the first year. But clearly there was more than lack of language here. What was missing was good mothering. Without good mothering, ill the first year of life especially, the capacity to survive is seriously affected.
Today no such severe lack exists as that ordered by Frederick. Nevertheless, some children are still backward in speaking. Most often the reason for this is that the mother is insensitive to the signals of the in fact, whose brain is programmed to learn language rapidly. If these sensitive periods are neglected, the ideal time for acquiring skills passes and they might never be learned so easily again. A bird learns to sing and to fly rapidly at the right time, but the process is slow and hard once the critical stage has passed.
Experts suggest that speech stages are reached in a fixed sequence and at a constant age, but there are cases where speech tins started late in a child who eventually turns out to be of high IQ. At twelve weeks a baby smiles and makes vowel-like sounds; at twelve months he can speak simple words and understand simple commands; at eighteen months he has a vocabulary of three to fifty words. At three he knows about 1000 words which he can put into sentences, and at four he knows iris language differs from that of his parents in style. rather than grammar.
Recent evidence suggests that an infant is born with the capacity of speaking. What is special about man's brain, compared with that of the monkey, is the complex system which enables a child to connect the sight and feel of, say, a toy-bear with the sound pattern "toy-bear". And even more incredible is the young brain's ability to pick out an order in language from the mixture of sound around him, to analyze, to combine and recombine the parts of a language in new ways.
But speech has to be induced, and this depends on interaction between the mother and the child, where the mother recognizes the signals in the child's babbling, grasping and smiling, and responds to them. Insensitivity of the mother to these signals dulls the interaction because the child gets discouraged and sends out on- ly the obvious signals. Sensitivity to the child's non-verbal signals is essential to the growth and development of language.
The purpose of the Frederick Ⅱ's experiment was ______.
A.to prove that children are bom with the ability to speak
B.to discover what language a child would speak without hearing any human speech
C.to find out what role careful nursing would play in teaching a child to speak
D.to prove that a child would be damaged without learning a language

Computer programmer Brendan Tammy earned &55000 a year by designing new computer games, yet he cannot find a bank prepared to let him have a check card. Instead, he has been told to wait another two years until he is 18.
He works for a small company in Liverpool, where most young people of his age are looking for jobs. Brendan's biggest headache is how to use his money. Though he has high payment, he cannot drive a car, or get credit cards.
Brendan got his job four months ago, a year after leaving school with six Olive's(普通成绩)and working for a time in a computer shop. "I got the job because the people who run the company knew I had already written some programs. " he said.
"I suppose 55000 pounds sounds a lot but I hope it will come to more than that this year. "He spends some of his money on records and clothes, and gives his mother 20 pounds a week as he lives with his parents. But most of his spare time is spent working.
"Unfortunately, computing was not part of our studies at school," he said. "But I had been studying it in books and magazines for four years in my spare time. I knew what I wanted to do and never considered staying on at school. Most people in this business are fairly young, anyway. I would like to earn a million and I suppose early retirement (退休)is a possibility. You never know when the market might disappear. "

B.He has got a job.

Just as I settle down to read or watch television, he demands that I play with him. If I get a telephone call, he screams in the background or knocks something over. I always have to hang up to find out what’s wrong with him. Babysitting with my little brother is no fun. He refuses to let me eat a snack in peace. Usually he wants half of whatever I have to eat. Then, when he finally grows tired, it takes about an hour for him to fall asleep.

Mr. Smith is telling two funny stories of his police work. I remember catching a “thief” in a clothes shop once. It was strange. The man was hiding a yellow sweater inside his coat. I thought he had stolen it, so I caught him. We found later that his wife gave him the sweater for his birthday, but he hated it. He just wanted to return it to the shop for money, but he didn’t want his wife to see him! We soon let him go. Another day, a man called Bob went into a bank on Sixth Street. He wrote on the back of an envelope, “Give me the money! Or I’ll kill you. ” and gave it to the bank clerk. She gave him $100,000 and the man ran away. Then we received a phone call from the bank clerk. She told us to go to the man’s house in Candy Town and get him. We caught him as soon as he got out of the elevator. He couldn’t believe that we found him so quickly. We told him that the front of the envelope he used had his name and address on it!

听力原文: Frozen forever in time are memories of wire rimmed glasses and a grey sweater that almost always had chocolate covered raisins in the left pocket. Grandpapa always read to me. I’d sit beside him and listen.
When Grandpapa got old & couldn’t see well enough to read anymore, I read to him. I’d read until his eyes closed and he started to fall asleep.
As I quietly got up, Grandpapa would reach into the pocket of his grey sweater and pull out a box of chocolate covered raisins, pressing them into my teen-aged hand. Eyes still closed, he would whisper "I remembered".
Grandpapa always said things like; "You scratch my back an’ I’ll scratch yours," and "Share, little one. Sharing makes everything better. ’ Somehow, everything always was better.
I’ll never forget the call from the hospital. Grandpapa had suffered a heart attack. My Mother was so upset, crying so many tears. It was snowing that night. Great big fluffy snowflakes falling through the glow of the streetlight.
It’s snowing this morning, big fluffy snowflakes fall through the glow of the streetlight. I sit and watch the snowflakes fall, thinking about Grandpapa with love in my heart and a cup of coffee in my hands. I will always remember his wise words, "Sharing makes every thing better. ’ The need to reach out to another human being is instinctive, and as necessary as the air that we breathe.
It is my sincere hope that you will want to share something of yourself. A kind word to a stranger perhaps, or a compliment to someone that deserves one. It is these small act a of sharing, and caring, that make this world a better place.

The reason why children learn their mother tongue so well lies partly in the child himself, and partly in the behavior. of the people around him.In the first place, the time of learning the mother tongue is the most favorable of all, namely, the first years of life.A child hears it spoken from morning till night and, what is more important, always in its genuine form, with the rightpronunciation, right intonation, right use of words and right structure.
