Most types of serious crime increased from 363.5 in every 100,000 people in 2003 to 535.5 in 2004. In that one year, there was one murder committed every 24 minutes, one case of robbery in every 10 minutes and one case of rape in every 7 minutes. The cases of murder involved 21,456 victims. There are also other factors than material conditions which are responsible for the sharp increase of the crime rate. In the first place, some states have made laws approving the death penalty but some have not. Secondly, the constitution allows every citizen to carry weapons for his own protection. It is therefore possible aid easy for anyone in the country to get a gun. Finally, there has been too much violence shown on TV and too much violence reported in newspapers of all kinds. The details of the crimes are so accurately described that even children know how to repeat what they have seen or read. All these have resulted in a higher frequency of crimes committed both by professional criminals and by nonprofessional ones such as murder, drug smuggling, robbery, pocket-picking, etc.

听力原文: The hand has been a symbol through the ages and in many cultures There are hundreds of expressions-and combinations of words using hand in the English language Let us examine some of the expressions that use hand.
To get a hand in is to begin a job, to begin to know something about it. When we learned completely, it will be easy for us. We will be able to do it hands down. If we do the job well, we may end up with the upper hand. That means to be in control or to have gained complete understanding of a situation. On the other hand, if the situation gets out of hand then, it is out of control. Then we may have to hand it to someone, to let someone else take over the business. It is time for us to wash our hands, to end it up completely. You can also lend a hand to someone but without really giving up your hand. You lend a hand when you help someone. You offer them a helping hand. If someone is kind enough to lend us a hand then we surely do not want to bite the hand that feeds us. We do not want to repay his kindness by treating him badly.

听力原文: At an early age, little girls' conversation is less definite and expresses more doubts, while little boys use conversation to establish status with their listeners.
These differences continue into adult life. In public conversations, men talk more and interrupt other speakers more. In private conversations, men and women speak in equal amounts, although they say things in a different style. For women, private talking is a way to establish and test intimacy. For men, private talking is a way to explore the power structure of a relationship.
Teaching is one job where the differences between men's and women's ways of talking show. When a man teaches a woman, he wants to show that he has more knowledge, and hence more power in conversation. He uses his language to show this. When a woman teaches another woman, however, she is more likely to take a sharing approach and to encourage her student to join in.
But it doesn't suggest that women are naturally more helpful. Actually, women feel they achieve power by being able to help others.

A.Boys tend to speak more than girls.
B.Girls are more expressive than boys.
C.Girls care more about their listeners.
D.Boys show more certainty about things than girls.

听力原文:M: Good evening and welcome to our program. Our guest is Mrs. Green, who is an expert in the field of environ mental protection. Welcome to our program, Mrs. Green.
W: Thank you.
M: Well, we hear it a lot in the news these days: "Recycle newspapers and save a tree. Collect bottles and cans so they can be reused in the manufacturing of new products." But how to promote the recycling movement? Can you give us some suggestions?
W: I think there are three essential keys.
M: What is the first one?
W: The first key is to have a more informed public, that is, to raise public awareness about the recycling process, to explain the kinds of materials that can be recycled, and provide ways on how to properly dispose of them. Local governments should educate the public on how to properly sort reusable materials from those, like waxed paper, carbon paper, plastic material such as fast food wrappers, that can't be recycled very easily.
M: Then what is the second key?
W: The second is the development of improved technology. Technological progress has been made on many fronts, but governmental agencies need to step up their support for companies involved in recycling by providing tax incentives, low-cost loans, or even grants to upgrade equipment and to encourage further research.
M: So what about the third essential key?
W: The final key is to develop a greater demand for recycled materials. This means increasing demand for the growing surplus of resources waiting to be recycled.
M: Recycling is a crucial link protecting our planet. The three keys Mrs. Green mentioned are important ways to achieve this end. Thanks for joining us, Mrs. Green.
W: You're welcome.
(23)
A.Keys to paper recycling.
B.Importance of recycling.
C.Keys to recycling improvement.
D.Technological progress in recycling.

听力原文:M: Honeybee Foods Corporation, engaged in fast food industry, has been developing rapidly and steadily in the Philippines these years, but few could imagine that it was started in 1975 as an ice cream parlor owned and run by the Chinese- Filipino Tan family. After the company President Tom Tan Caktiong (better known as TTC) realized that events triggered by the 1977 oil crisis would double the price of ice cream, Honeybee had diversified into sandwiches. The Tan's hamburger, made to a home-style. Philippine recipe, quickly became a customer favorite. A year later, the family incorporated as Honeybee Foods Corporation.
The company's name came from TTC'S vision of employees working happily and efficiently, like bees in a hive. Friendliness pervaded the organization and became one of the “Five Fs” that summed up Honeybee's philosophy. The others were flavorful food, a fun atmosphere, flexibility in catering to customer needs, and a focus on families (children flocked to the company's bee mascot whenever it appeared in public). The company's value proposition offered all of these to customers at an affordable price. The recipe of the local Filipino flavor and sound operation and management enabled the corporation to grow rapidly. Up to 1985, Honeybee had 28 chains in the Philippines.
The domestic business success of the corporation made President TTC get greatly interested in international expansion. Since 1985, Honeybee started seven chain stores respectively in Singapore, Taiwan, Brunei, and Indonesia. However, except for the four extremely successful chains in Brunei, the other three all failed in the end. The major causes for the business failure included lack of full exchange and communication among different divisions, some problems in the organizational structure, and too fast development of international business.
Honeybee had opened a large number of chains in a short period of time, but owing to limited management ability, many of these chains were unprofitable. The corporation should take the development step by step and make sure that each new chain was profitable. Only in this way could the corporation guarantee sustainable development.

听力原文: An international children's charity says more than one-fourth of the children in Asia are living in absolute poverty and almost half of them are seriously deprived. In a report issued in Thailand, the group says that many Asian families are not benefiting from the region's booming economy and it has pledged $1 billion in aid over the next decade.
The charity group Plan International says 600 million Asian children are deprived of one of the seven basic needs used to define poverty, including food, safe water, shelter, health and education. And it says 350 million children, equivalent to the population of the European Union, are deprived of two or more basic needs, classifying them as absolutely poor.
The group's executive director, Tom Miller, compares these figures to those of the victims from the earthquake and tsunami that devastated parts of southern Asia eight months ago. "Those numbers are absolutely staggering. The world has focused very much on Asia through the tsunami. But in many ways, what we're talking about is, this is a silent tsunami that is happening every single day."
The group, basing its figures on United Nations statistics, says some Asian countries, like China and parts of Southeast Asia, have considerably reduced their numbers of poor children. But it says significant populations of poor people remain in isolated rural areas and among ethnic minorities.
According to the news, which of the following is not among the basic needs used to define poverty?
A.food
B.health
C.education
D.freedom
